The true constraint on innovation is rarely the quantity of resources, but the quality of ideas.

There are unlimited problems to solve in every field, and resources are often limited. But what if the greatest obstacle to your success isn’t time or money, but the way you’ve been thinking about the problem? For those of us trying to change the world, tight budgets and pressing deadlines are often the norm - particularly in non-profits, start-ups, and government agencies. After 20 years working on environmental challenges, Jake Levenson discovered that there is always a solution if you learn to look in unexpected places.

Meet Jake Levenson

Judah Jacob ‘Jake’ Levenson is a marine biologist who bridges conservation and innovation, using science, technology, and forward-thinking solutions to protect the interconnected well-being of animals, people, and the habitats we share.

Over the past two decades, Jake’s work has taken him around the world. His projects have included capacity-building among fishermen for whale disentanglement in Zanzibar, community sea turtle science and conservation in Dominica, and the spatial ecology of large whales in Iceland. He is also the co-founder of Flukebook.org, a global effort that unites marine mammal scientists with the public aimed at increasing our understanding of whale migrations.

Jake’s “day job” is with the US government at the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, where he focuses on developing innovative solutions to arrive at efficient and effective decision-making around protected species and energy and mineral development

Jake holds a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of New England, a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Boston University, and is completing a PhD at the University of Massachusetts.
